■ 12/04/09 - Battleforge As people who walk on the more ‘nerdy’ side of life, gamers have always had a certain fascination with collectibles. Perhaps it’s a throwback from our childhood that never truly went away; perhaps it is to do with the very competitive nature of gamers, and the fact we just had to have a better collection then our friends. Or maybe it was just because we like buying new things. All I know is that when I was young, Pokémon cards were cool. Then I grew up of course, matured a little bit, and then Yu-Gi-Oh cards were cool, and someone somewhere was laughing their butts off because collectable card games sell like crazy. ■ 25/03/09 - BattleForge Last summer I sold a load of old Topps cards on eBay. What was striking was (a) the prices people were willing to pay for cards of shaggy-haired Belgian soccer players, and (b) how many decade-old unopened packets are up for sale. How could anyone resist tearing them open to see what’s inside? That’s the whole joy of it!

■ 04/03/09 - BattleForge What would happen if the nerds who play collectible-card games challenged the nerds who play real-time strategy games to a fight? ■ 01/03/09 - BattleForge At first glance, Battleforge is a bit of an intimidating beastie. It was for us at any rate: at the end of a full day of checking out EA's first-quarter line-up, we felt a bit threatened by the concept of an electronic trading card game. Things like Magic: The Gathering have always looked fearfully complicated to us, and we weren't exactly encouraged by the revelation that Battleforge involves the use of 200 virtual cards - cards that players buy and trade via microtransactions. ■ 01/03/09 - Battleforge With Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 out, and StarCraft II and Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2 looming ominously over the horizon, RTS fans have got it good. But there's one game you might not be aware of that you really should, and that's BattleForge, EA Phenomic's new MMO-style fantasy RTS that incorporates Magic the Gathering-esque card collecting. Intrigued? Head filled with questions? Good, cos we got answers, from producer Sébastien Nell no less. Read on for the low-down on what could be one of 2009's surprise hits.
