■ 02/03/09 - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin You know, sometimes an acronym says it best. With First Encounter Assault Recon this was certainly the case. Given that the shortened version conveyed a sentiment that hallmarked the game, it wasn’t long before “F.E.A.R.” had sent its longwinded brother into oblivion. And as a tense first-person shooter, F.E.A.R. worked. Sure, it paid more than a passing homage to the slow-motion gimmick, but it did so with style. ■ 02/03/09 - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin It’s been four years since Alma’s ominous scare-tactics in the original F.E.A.R., a classy first-person shooter bristling with slow-mo shenanigans and brutal firefights. But despite its sturdy foundations, it was mired in its adherence to corridor crawling and a grey palate. This lack of variety ultimately meant that F.E.A.R. was good but not great. With the sequel, Monolith has done the obvious—they’ve infused the game with more color, changed up the level design and added more variety. While these by-the-number additions look good on paper, the sequel lacks the spark of its original. In the end, F.E.A.R. 2 ends up being drabber than its considerably greyer predecessor, largely thanks to a development cycle that seems to have focused on simply re-writing the wrongs of the past rather than creating something genuinely new and exciting. ■ 01/03/09 - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Horror games and first-person shooters are genres that seem to be made for each other, so it's quite surprising that the two of them "don't get it on" more often. Monolith managed to oversee a successful cross-pollination in 2005, and the result was F.E.A.R. - a creepy-as-hell survival outing that mixed satisfying gunplay with a Greatest Hits list of Scary Things. Ghosts? Check. Cannibalism? Check. A creepy little girl? Check. Lots and lots of blood? Check and check again. Preview de F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin sur Xbox 360, chez VideoGamer.com.

■ 01/03/09 - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. was great, but F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin promises to be even better. With original developer Monolith Productions in charge and 360 and PS3 versions set for release at the same time as the PC version, the future's bright, or should that be dark, for fans of all things F.E.A.R. With the game's Friday February 13 release date (what else?) inching ever closer, we thought it would be a good idea to sit down with primary art lead Dave Matthews (who may or may not have a band), and face our greatest fears. ■ 01/03/09 - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin The development of F.E.A.R. 2 has been akin to a British soap opera. Original F.E.A.R. developer Monolith, a Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment owned development studio, couldn't make F.E.A.R 2 for Vivendi, so a sequel was announced for Warner. With Vivendi owning the F.E.A.R. name the Warner sequel had to be called something else, so a competition was set up for fans to name the game. It was decided that Project Origin fitted best, so until a week or so ago we'd been looking forward to a game that had the characters from F.E.A.R. but didn't have the name. Then, in a shock announcement, Warner revealed that it had acquired the name from Vivendi - presumably because Activision Blizzard didn't want another FPS in its portfolio - meaning we're kind of back to where we wanted to be a few years ago. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is due for release from Warner in Q1 2009 and we went hands-on with the latest build to see how it's shaping up.

■ 18/02/09 - Project Origin Any game in which you have a small powder keg of gunfire at your disposal shouldn’t be scary. It certainly shouldn’t be creepy. It shouldn’t have you slowly stalking a dimly lit corridor packing a beefy shotgun in anticipation of the grim, blood-soaked ghoul that’s lurking around the corner.
